Infrastructures

Most roadways winter maintenance depends upon using salt and deicing chemicals for deicing, causing damage to concrete and corrosion of reinforcing steel. This is a major concern to transportation officials due to rapid infrastructures degradation. Conductive concrete is a concrete mixture containing steel and carbon materials to enable conduction of electricity, with good strength and durability. Applications include roadway deicing, electrical grounding, radiant heating, rebar cathodic protection, structural health monitoring, and electromagnetic wave shielding. Due to its electrical resistance, conductive concrete generates heat to prevent ice formation on a paved surface when connected to a power source. The conductive concrete developed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been successfully implemented in several demonstration projects.
