Aluminum has been used on bridges since the 1930’s. Over the last years there have been various research and development efforts that have focused primarily on aluminum bridge decking. Extruded structural aluminum and fabrication offers bridge owners a lightweight deck solution to address structural deficiency and obsolescence. A lighter deck includes an alternative to other materials. Specific examples of proven processes and techniques from bridges made in the United States will be illustrated. An aluminum bridge deck pilot project installed in Quebec will also be presented.
