The Dutch are famous for their high levels of cycling even in small and medium sized cities. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a cultural thing. This presentation looks at the set of deliberate policies that lead to this high use of active modes. As a result of high use in cycling, transit use is quite low in the Netherlands especially in small cities. However, recently policies to better integrate transit with cycling and new mobility options like the e-bike and shared mobility have great potential to improve the mobility options in small and medium sized cities.
