Emulating Transit Signal Priority Signal Control Operations in Simulation for the City of Toronto

The City of Toronto evaluated two corridors using the microsimulation software, Aimsun. The analysis was done as part of the wider signal optimization studies being conducted under the City’s Signal Optimization Program. Bathurst Street and Dundas Street are major arterial corridors and critical transit routes. They are also both part of a complex system, intersecting with other major arterials and having heavy pedestrian activity at key locations. Due to the complexity of the corridor operations and the level of detail required, the simulation of the controller operations was a fundamental aspect of the simulation study. To incorporate this properly, four customized TSP algorithms that emulated the controller operations along each corridor.
